Mychal has been a practicing interpreter since 2012 and is nationally certified through the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf. He holds a Master of Arts in Interpreting Studies – Teaching from Western Oregon University and a Bachelor of Arts in Sign Language Interpreting from Augustana University. Mychal has extensive experience across various interpreting settings throughout his career, including business, K-12 education, healthcare, performance, platform, post-secondary, VRS/VRI, and more. Some of Mychal’s research and professional interests include the effects of stress on VRS interpreters, conflict resolution, performance interpreting, and the graduation-to-certification gap. Currently, Mychal enjoys working in a variety of settings as a community and VRI interpreter, an ITP instructor, and a mentor.
Mychal views mentoring as an essential relationship lasting throughout one’s career. He has experienced firsthand how the support of a mentor can make a positive impact and aims to give back that same experience to others. Mychal supports a mentee-centered approach, emphasizing the importance of empowering mentees to take ownership of their learning journey. He believes in fostering an inclusive environment where diverse perspectives are valued and in promoting collaboration both within and outside of the mentoring session.
Mychal’s mentoring philosophy is rooted in the belief that interpreters are life-long learners. He draws from a progressivist approach, emphasizing real-world situations and creating a learning environment that encourages questioning, exploration, reflection, and fun. Mychal is committed to preparing mentees for the complexities of the interpreting profession by supporting their growth and development in a holistic and balanced manner.
In addition to his professional work, Mychal stays active with his family and enjoys baking and playing TTRPGs.
