ASL Lecturer, Oklahoma State University
Hello, I am Bree! I am a Deaf individual from Oklahoma. I grew up in a hearing household as the only Deaf member. I was mainstreamed throughout my education. I graduated from University of Oklahoma; if you follow football, one of big 12—OU. I have bachelor’s degree in International Area and Studies. I love languages and cultures. I enjoy learning about the different backgrounds of everyone I meet. I analyze their needs and skills which I do enjoy. This instills me to become a Deaf Interpreter since 2011. I have worked with different companies; locally and nationwide. Their agencies will send me to different settings such as mental health, medical, some legal, education, and so forth. I have experienced many situations where I can share with you, mentees as our future interpreters or current interpreters who want to improve your skills. I want to be involved with mentoring to improve your skills, gain experience and knowledge; I am also interested in bringing discussions to develop your skills to better your interpreting work. Other than interpreting, I have been a rater and evaluator for interpreter’s levels and certifications where I analyze their work for different companies through their testing. I am also a current instructor for ASL courses at a university in my home state. I often analyze signs, grammar, and concepts to think outside of the box and discuss why certain terms are chosen. It is to develop the understanding a better communication between individuals for the future. My goal in this work is to establish a bridge between hearing and Deaf cultures to create a bigger community. This is why I want to be a mentor, it is my hope to meet you and work with to improve your skills and for me to understand what you want as an interpreter.
