Interpreting for Deaf/HH professionals requires cultural awareness, professional etiquette, and the ability to navigate workplace dynamics effectively. This presentation will provide ASL interpreters with essential strategies for building rapport while maintaining professional boundaries, ensuring a respectful and seamless interpreting experience.
Through real-world scenarios, we will examine best and least effective practices in workplace settings, exploring alternative approaches to improve communication and collaboration. Key topics will include understanding Deaf/HH professional expectations, fostering trust without overstepping boundaries, and handling challenges such as power dynamics, confidentiality, and workplace hierarchy.
By the end of this session, interpreters will leave with practical tools to enhance their effectiveness, professionalism, and ability to support Deaf/HH professionals in achieving succes
Educational Objectives:
By the end of this presentation, ASL interpreters will be able to:
1. Identify at least three best practices and three common pitfalls when interpreting for Deaf/HH professionals in workplace settings.
2. Demonstrate appropriate strategies for rapport building while maintaining professional boundaries with Deaf/HH professionals.
3. Describe the impact of power dynamics in interpreted interactions and how to navigate them effectively.
4. Apply alternative approaches to improve communication clarity and collaboration in professional environments.
5. Analyze real-world scenarios to determine the most effective interpreting strategies based on context and professional etiquette.
6. Develop an action plan for implementing workplace-appropriate behaviors that support Deaf/HH professionals while ensuring interpreter neutrality.
Presenter Bio
Kaylah Vogt, MPS is a mental health professional and independent mental wellness consultant, specializing in addiction and mental health counseling, professional development, and workplace well-being. She provides presentations, wellness workshops, and consultation to organizations and individuals looking to enhance mental wellness, stress management, and resilience.
Kaylah earned her Master of Professional Studies in Integrated Behavioral Health from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, a program that integrates both addiction counseling and mental health treatment. Her expertise allows her to address the complexities of co-occurring disorders and support individuals in achieving long-term well-being.
She is notorious for her groundbreaking lawsuit against a Minnesota hospital for employment discrimination, a case that led the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) to update its guidelines on workplace accessibility for Deaf and Hard of Hearing professionals. Her advocacy has contributed to systemic changes that promote fair treatment and inclusion in professional settings.
Kaylah is available for travel opportunities, bringing mental wellness experiences to corporate retreats, professional conferences, and immersive travel programs.
