Event Details
This workshop will broadly increase ASL interpreter understanding of topics pertaining to the transgender/gender expansive community. The first part will provide a foundation in trans 101, including terminology in ASL and English. The second part will address ethics and best practices when working with trans D/HH consumers. Topics addressed will include terminology discussion, cultural humility, linguistic adaptations, and allyship across a variety of interpretation settings.
Educational Objectives:
-Describe the foundational constructs of gender
-Discuss social issues relating to the T/GE community and apply a social justice perspective to support the needs of T/GE consumers
-Identify ways to customize the ASL interpretation process to best interpret topics for T/GE environments and consumers.
Presenter Bio
Oliver is a public health advocate and researcher committed to social, economic, racial, gender, and Deaf/disability justice and equity through legislative development, advocacy, and strategic action regarding social determinants of health for marginalized populations. Oliver currently is pursuing a Masters in Public Health at UC Berkeley. Previously, Oliver worked at Lambda Legal Defense & Education Fund and New York Legal Assistance Group, working towards comprehensive policy and litigation on behalf of LGBTQ youth within child welfare and juvenile justice systems. Oliver is also a veteran communications team member with Trans Lifeline, the only crisis hotline run by trans people for trans people. Oliver’s work regarding social determinants of health has been published with Teen Vogue, Huffington Post, The Advocate, International Journal of Transgender Health, and more.
