Educational Objectives:
Participants will explore
- some Black historical information,
- examine the difference between what is considered black and brown people,
- define white fragility and other weapons of whiteness,
- understand how to identify microaggressions
- and discuss some practical steps to be taken by individuals to become better allies.
Presenter Bio
Valerie is a Teacher of the Deaf/Hard of hearing as well as a working interpreter who has been teaching for 22 years and interpreting for 10 year. She is a proud mother of 5, one of who is a deaf adult. Advocating for the underprivileged and dismantling systems of oppression are two of her passions. Valerie has been an activist fighting for racial justice since she was in her teens.
Melissa Lund is thrilled to have the opportunity to present with Valerie Shirley. She is passionate about unpacking the ways internalized white supremacy impacts interpreting. She is committed to fighting for justice and recognizes the work of becoming an antic-racist is a life-long process. She has been interpreting for fourteen years, working as a staff interpreter with the University of Minnesota and now exclusively as a freelance interpreter. She has a BA in Education from Northwestern University as well as a degree in Interpretation from St. Paul College.
