Mayra Castrejon-Hernandez is a Latina deaf woman. She was born and raised in a Mexican-cultured home. She became deaf as a young child and attended Wisconsin School for the Deaf.

Mayra Castrejon-Hernandez is a Latina deaf woman. She was born and raised in a Mexican-cultured home. She became deaf as a young child and attended Wisconsin School for the Deaf. She grew up with a dual culture; the dominant deaf and white culture at the school and a Mexican culture at her home. She will present about Mexican’s culture, traditions, religions, and food. She will also tell you the story of her life journey and the Mexico’s systemic oppression against the deaf people.
Educational Objectives
- Learn about the intersectionality between Mexican identity and deaf identity.
- Learn about Mexican’s religions, traditions, culture, and food.
- Learn about the oppression of the deaf Mexican population.
Presenter Bio
Mayra Castrejon-Hernandez was born in Guadalajara Mexico. Mayra has a Deaf sister and 2 older brothers. Mayra currently works as an ASL tutor for a local community college . She also works for the Wisconsin Educational Service Program as deaf mentor to teach ASL with parents and their children. In addition to her other work, Mayra is also the current President of Deaf Women of Color
