The Child Protective Services (CPS) process does not travel a linear path. From the moment a referral is made, to closing a case, this process can take many twists and turns. Far too often, CPS will appear at a school without an interpreter expecting the educational interpreter to provide interpretation between the child and CPS. While this may be more convenient for CPS, there are multiple reasons why this isn’t most appropriate for the child, the educational institution including the educational interpreter, and CPS. During this webinar, small group sessions will be utilized to discuss these and other issues. Professional knowledge and experience will be supplemented with the presenter’s personal experiences as a foster and an adoptive parent.
Educational Objectives:
• Participants will be able to explain the CPS process from intake to completion.
• Participants will be to justify why Child Protective Services should not be utilizing the school’s educational interpreters but providing their own for all contact with students, staff, and parents.
• Participants will identify talking points to discuss and advise their administration regarding the educational interpreter’s interactions with CPS.
• Participants will identify ways that they can provide advocacy and support for students who are in foster care.
ASLIS virtual workshops are NOT recorded for later viewing.

Presenter Bio
Andrea M. Bright-Fontana, M.A., BEI Court, Master, IV, and RID NIC-Advanced. Andrea was a teacher at the Texas School for the Deaf for 6 years prior to deciding that interpreting was her true calling. She has worked professionally as an interpreter for over 20 years and specializes in mental health, post-secondary, medical, and legal interpreting. She and her husband and their 3 boys were foster parents for 8 years, and have adopted 3 beautiful Deaf daughters. Since becoming a foster/adoptive parent, she has recognized the need for more education in the interpreting field related to Child Protective Services (CPS) and working with children who have experienced trauma. In her free time, she can be found at any of her 6 children’s sporting events, camping, the movies, the arcade, and…did she mention 6 kids?!
