Sunny Brysch is a Deaf Asian woman and the second generation of a Deaf family. She is proud of the Deaf generational family and the ASL she was raised with. Sunny has a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Wisconsin-Superior. She also has a Master’s in Social Work from Augsburg College. Unfortunately, a career in that field has limited opportunities due to communication barriers. She returned to school for ASL Studies to earn the required credentials to pursue a career as an ASL teacher.
Additionally, Sunny has trained ASL interpreters to improve their DeafBlind interpreting skills for a few years; she trained interpreters on how to work in different agencies and settings. Currently, she training to become a Deaf Interpreter. She works full-time in Deaf studies at the University of Minnesota-Duluth (UMD) and is an adjunct ASL Professor at Lake Superior College (LSC). Previously, Sunny was an ASL Tutor/Mentor for some high schools and colleges for a few years where she offered to teach ASL as well as provide as many opportunities and resources as she could.
Sunny’s strengths are to encourage, support, and foster language skills and build signing confidence. She tends to emphasize the importance of face grammar structure: non-manual markers, ASL grammar structure rules, etc. By focusing on face grammar structure, it improves both receptive and expressive skills pathways as well as gives ASL production skills. She provide examples to help students gain a better understanding of context, concepts, etc. Anything she can do to help their language skills thrive.
