Greater MN Programs

ASLIS receives grant funding from the Minnesota Department of Human Services, Deaf, Deafblind and Hard of Hearing State Services Division. The grant funds are dedicated to improving quality interpreting services in Greater Minnesota. What does “Greater Minnesota” mean? If you live in any part of the state that is not in the core 7-county Twin Cities metro area (that is, outside of Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey, Scott, and Washington counties).

Some of our programs work to help interpreters living in Greater Minnesota. We create opportunities for interpreters to improve their skills and meet Deaf community needs. Some of our programs are for Deaf people who live in Greater Minnesota. We help connect Deaf people to interpreting services for 12-Step meetings and for funerals.

Explore opportunities to acquire new skills and expand the kinds of jobs you can accept! Grant programs are open to interpreters who live in Greater MN. This is define as anywhere outside of the Twin Cities’ core 7-county area (Anoka, Dakota, Carver, Hennepin, Ramsey, Scott, and Washington counties).

Don’t live in Greater MN? If you do at least 30 hours of work per quarter in Greater MN, you may still qualify for these programs. Find out how!

Focus Area 1: Interpreter Access

Programs in this area support access to interpreters for Deaf individuals in specific situations when no other entity is required to pay for interpreters.

Focus Area 2: Recruitment

Programs in this area focus on bringing new interest to the field of interpreting. Our team will give presentations in schools and attend job fairs & career events.

Focus Area 3: New Interpreters

Programs in this area focus on supporting new interpreters through internships, apprenticeships, and certification preparation.

NEW this year is a Certified Interpreter Collective, allowing certified interpreters working in Greater MN to share the hosting duties of a student intern. Announcements about this program will be coming from various sources over the next weeks and months.

Focus Area 4: Skill Development

Programs in this area focus on bringing new trainings and workshops to interpreters currently living and working in Greater Minnesota.
