Workshop Description:
Educational Interpreting is so much more than just knowing how to interpret. Join us to gather more information about what it means to be an educational interpreter in Minnesota. We will cover the following topics: the MN K-12 law and what that means for non-certified as well as certified interpreters, what a “day in the life” of an educational interpreter could look like, your collaborators on the educational team, and some skills that will come in handy for anyone currently working in education or considering working in the educational setting. We will wrap up our time by sharing some great resources for the educational setting and will set aside time for a Q and A.
Presenter Bio
Presented By: Melissa Barg, NIC, CI/CT, NAD IV and Kari Brecht, EIPA
Melissa Barg (NIC, CI/CT, NAD IV) has been interpreting for 35 years: 34 years in education, 14 years in VRS, and 1 year freelance. She mentored non-certified educational interpreters for 23 years. She is a local and national presenter and enjoys encouraging educational interpreters to be better; to do better, and to raise the bar for themselves and others. In addition, Melissa is a co-facilitator of the Community of Practice for mentors in Region 11 (metro area). When she is not doing something interpreting related, you will find Melissa with her grandkids or on a beach with her hubby.
Kari Brecht (EIPA) has been interpreting for 15 years, primarily as an educational interpreter and part-time as a VRS interpreter. Kari has been a local and national presenter, a mentor to non-certified interpreters, and a volunteer with Minnesota Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (MRID) in various capacities. She maintains that a sense of curiosity mixed with an “I can do this” attitude is the foundation for continual growth in interpreters. Outside of working, you can probably find Kari making or creating something!
