In this experiential workshop, we shine a compassionate light on recovering vitality after empathic strain (also known as compassion fatigue). Interpreters navigate the intricate dance of managing our emotions, while also being attentive to the emotions, needs, and cultural nuances of others. Proximity alone makes us prone to absorbing the intensity of others’ experiences. This unique workshop provides a nurturing space for interpreters to explore and address the empathic strain that can accompany their profession. Through tailored exercises and facilitated discussions, participants will learn to recognize and manage the impact of empathic strain. Our goal is to equip interpreters with practical tools to replenish their energy, foster emotional resilience, and strike a harmonious balance between dedication to professional effectiveness and personal well-being. Join us as we explore how to rediscover vitality and thrive in our rewarding yet challenging role.
Educational Objectives:
- Define secondary trauma and differentiate between Empathic Strain, Compassion Fatigue, Vicarious Trauma, and Burnout
- Identify at least two potential vulnerabilities and protective factors for these conditions.
- Discuss the trajectory of Compassion Fatigue and strategies for recovery
- Develop and share at least 3 strategies for maintaining integrity and well-being while interpreting personally difficult material.
ASLIS virtual workshops are NOT recorded for later viewing.
